Methods:In50patientswithlungcancerweexaminedfatigueandthedeteriorationofqualityoflifeinpatientsusingthe Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Anemia (FACT-An) and -Fatigue (FACT-F) subscales of FACT-General and the MentaladjustmenttoCancer(MAC)questionnaires.Resultswerecomparedwithtryptophanbreakdownaswellasserum concentrationsofimmuneactivationmarkers. Results:Scoresofpsychologicaltestscorrelatedsignificantlywithtryptophanbreakdownandwithcirculatorymarkersof inflammation.However,immuneactivationandtryptophanbreakdownwerenotrelatedtoMACscores. Conclusions: Tryptophan breakdown relateswithfatigueandimpaired qualityoflifein patientswithlung cancer,while decliningtryptophanlevelsarenotassociatedwithpatients’copingstrategies.
