In an apparent response to the female morphologicaladaptation,malesofthisspeciesaddedtotheirtypicallyviolentcoercivemountingofthefemalenewpost- mounting, pre-copulatory courtship signals produced by tapping the water’s surface with the mid-legs. These courtship signalsareintimateinthesensethattheyareaimedatthefemale,onwhomthemaleisalreadymounted.Femalesrespond tothesignalsbyexposingtheirhiddengenitaliaforcopulatoryintromission.Ourresultsindicatethattheapparentvictory ofcoevolutionaryarmsracebyonesexintermsofmorphologymaytriggerevolutionofabehavioralphenotypeinthe oppositesex.
