It remains unclear, despite several previous studies, whether the morphological variation within Hawaiian Metrosiderosisduetohybridization,geneticpolymorphism,phenotypicplasticity,orsomecombinationoftheseprocesses. TheHawaiianMetrosideroscomplexhasbecomeamodelsystemtostudyecologyandevolution;howeverthisisthefirst studytousemicrosatellitedataforaddressinginter-islandpatternsofvariationfromacrosstheHawaiianIslands. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Tennuclearmicrosatellitelociweregenotypedfrom143individualsofMetrosideros .We tookadvantageofthebi-parentalinheritanceandrapidmutationrateofthesedatatoexaminethevalidityofthecurrent taxonomyandtoinvestigatewhetherMetrosiderosplantsfromthesameislandaremoregeneticallysimilarthanplantsthat are morphologically similar. The Bayesian algorithm of the program STRUCTURE was used to define genetic groups within HawaiianMetrosiderosandthecloselyrelatedtaxonM.collinafromtheMarquesasandAustralIslands.Severalstandardand nestedAMOVAswereconductedtotestwhetherthegeneticdiversityisstructuredgeographicallyortaxonomically.
