NegativePriminginaJointSelectionTask TimothyN.Welsh1*,LauraM.McDougall2 1FacultyofKinesiologyandPhysicalEducation,UniversityofToronto,Toronto,Ontario,Canada,2FacultyofKinesiology,UniversityofCalgary,Calgary,Alberta,Canada Abstract Recentstudieshavesuggestedthattheobservationofanotherindividualexecutingamovementactivatesrepresentations oftheobservedmovementintheobserver.Theserepresentationsarethoughttobeusedbyothersystemstofacilitate avarietyofsocialcognitiveprocesses,suchassocialsearches.Previousresearchonsocialsearcheshasprimarilyinvolved contextswheretargetswerepresentedinisolation.Typicalenvironments,however,containtargetsandnon-targetsand onemustselectthecorrectinformationfortaskcompletion.Togaininsightintotheprocessesunderlyingsocialsearches, participantscompletednegativeprimingtasksaloneandinpairs.Resultsindicatedthattherewerenodifferencesinthe negativeprimingeffectsresultingfromtheparticipantsobservedorperformedtheprecedingselectiontask.Further,the correlationsbetweenindividualandjointnegativeprimingsuggestthatsimilarprocesseswereactivatedonthesetasks.The findingssupporttheco-representationhypothesisandprovideinsightintotheprocessesunderlyingselectioninindividual andsocialsettings.
