NeuropsychiatricSymptomsinPatientswithAortic Aneurysms BernhardT.Baune1*,StevenJ.Unwin2,FrancesQuirk2,JonathanGolledge3 1DisciplineofPsychiatry,UniversityofAdelaide,Adelaide,SouthAustralia,Australia,2DisciplineofPsychiatry,JamesCookUniversity,Townsville,Queensland,Australia, 3VascularBiologyUnit,JamesCookUniversity,Townsville,Queensland,Australia Abstract Background: Emergingevidence suggests thatvascular diseaseconfersvulnerability toalate-onsetof depressive illness andtheimpairmentofspecificcognitivefunctions,mostnotablyinthedomainsofmemorystorageandretrieval.Lower limbathero-thrombosisandabdominalaorticaneurysm(AAA)havebothbeenpreviouslyassociatedwithneuropsychiatric symptomspossiblyduetoassociatedintracerebralvasculardiseaseorsystemicinflammation,hencesuggestingthatthese illnessesmayberegardedasmodelstoinvestigatethevasculargenesisofneuropsychiatricsymptoms.Theaimofthisstudy wastocompareneuropsychiatricsymptomssuchasdepression,anxietyandavarietyofcognitivedomainsinpatientswho hadsymptomsofperipheralathero-thrombosis(intermittentclaudication)andthosewhohadanasymptomaticabdominal aorticaneurysmAAA. Methodology/Principal Findings: In across-sectional study, 26 participants with either intermittent claudication or AAA were assessed using a detailed neuropsychiatric assessment battery for various cognitive domains and depression and anxietysymptoms(HamiltonDepressionandAnxietyScales).Studentttestandlinearregressionanalyseswereappliedto compare neuropsychiatric symptoms between patient groups. AAA participants showed greater levels of cognitive impairmentinthedomainsofimmediateanddelayedmemoryascomparedtopatientswhohadintermittentclaudication. Cognitivedysfunctionwasbestpredictedbyincreasingaorticdiameter.CRPwaspositivelyrelatedtoAAAdiameter,butnot tocognitivefunction.AAAandaorticdiameterinparticularwereassociatedwithcognitivedysfunctioninthisstudy. Conclusions/Significance: AAA patients are at a higher risk for cognitive impairment than intermittent claudication
