Appropriate sample preparation forthediverserangeofcellsandtissuesoftheeyeisessentialtoensurereliableresults.Currentmethods ofprotein staining for2D, protein labelling fortwo-dimensional difference gelelectrophoresis, gel-based expression analysis and protein identification by MS are summarised. The uses of gel-free MS-basedstrategies(MuDPIT,iTRAQ,ICATandSILAC)arealsodiscussed.Proteomictechnologies promisetoshednewlightontooculardiseaseprocessesthatcouldleadtothediscoveryofstrongnovel biomarkersandtherapeutictargetsusefulinmanyophthalmicconditions.
