Methodology/PrincipalFindings:InthecapitalcitiesoftheCISandtheEU2004memberstates,ATphysiciansholdingan academic position at least equivalent to an associate professor and performing the three classical tasks in academic medicine(teaching,researchandpatientcare)wereinterviewedabouttheiruseofandfamiliaritywiththeInternetand9 onlineliteratureservices,includingjournalsandbibliographicaldatabasessuchasPubMed(Medline),TheCochraneLibrary andWebofScience.Librarystaffmemberswereinterviewedabouttheavailabilityoftheseonlineliteratureservicesattheir libraries.About750physiciansand40librarystaffmemberswereinvitedforparticipation.Eventually124ATphysiciansand 22 library staff members participated. Internet was everywhere available, but used daily by more AT physicians in the EU2004(71%versus48%intheCIS,P=.005).ATphysiciansintheEU2004accessedahigherpercentageofallarticlesonline (74%versus43%intheCIS,P,.001).PubMed(P,.001),TheCochraneLibrary(P,.001)andWebofScience(P,.003)were usedmorefrequentlyintheEU2004.IntheEU2004moreATphysicianswerefamiliarwithOpenAccessjournals(89%versus 51%intheCIS,P,.001). Conclusions/Significance:ATphysiciansintheCISuseonlinemedicalliteraturelessthanintheEU2004.Itisrecommended that the awareness of freely available o
