Norepinephrineisacatecholaminesuspectedtoplayaroleinsonglearning.Thegoalofthisstudywastoinvestigatethe roleofnorepinephrineinbird’sownsongselectivity,apropertythoughttobeimportantforauditoryfeedbackprocesses requiredforsonglearningandmaintenance. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Usingfunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging,weshowthatinjectionofDSP-4,aspecific noradrenergictoxin,unmasksownsongselectivityinthedorsalpartofNCM,asecondaryauditoryregion. Conclusions/Significance:Thelevelofnorepinephrinethroughoutthetelencephalonisknowntobehighinalertbirdsand lowinsleepingbirds.Ourresultssuggestthatnorepinephrineactivitycanbefurtherdecreased,givingrisetoastrongown songselectivesignalindorsalNCM.Thislatentownsongselectivesignal,whichisonlyrevealedunderconditionsofvery lownoradrenergicactivity,mightplayaroleintheauditoryfeedbackand/ortheintegrationofthisfeedbackwiththemotor circuitryforvocallearningandmaintenance.
