Fisheretal.BMCPregnancyandChildbirth2012,12:126 /1471-2393/12/126 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Participantexperiencesofmindfulness-based childbirtheducation:aqualitativestudy ColleenFisher1*,YvonneHauck2,SaraBayes3,4andJeanByrne5 Abstract Background:Childbirthisanimportanttransitionallifeevent,butoneinwhichmanywomenaredissatisfied stemminginpartfromasensethatlabourissomethingthathappenstothemratherthanwiththem.Promoting maternalsatisfactionwithchildbirthmeansequippingwomenwithcommunicationanddecisionmakingskillsthat willenhancetheirabilitytofeelinvolvedintheirlabour.Additionally,traditionalantenataleducationdoesnot necessarilyprepareexpectantmothersandtheirbirthsupportpartneradequatelyforbirth.Mindfulness-based interventionsappeartoholdpromiseinaddressingtheseissues.Mindfulness-basedChildBirthEducation(MBCE) wasapilotinterventioncombiningskills-basedantenataleducationandMindfulnessBasedStressReduction. ParticipantexperiencesofMBCE,bothofexpectantmothersandtheirbirthsupportpartnersarethefocusofthis article. Methods:Agenericqualitativeapproachwasutilisedforthisstudy.Pregnantwomenbetween18and28weeks gestation,over18yearsofage,nulliparouswithsingletonpregnanciesandnottakingmedicationforadiagnosed mentalillnessortakingillicitdrugswereeligibletoundertaketheMBCEprogramwhichwasruninametropolitan cityinAustralia.Focusgroupswith12mothersandsevenbirthsupportpartnerswereundertakenapproximately fourmonthsafterthecompletionofMBCE.Audiorecordingsofthegroupsweretranscribedverbatimandanalysed thematicallyusingthemethodofconstantcomparisonbyallfourauthorsindependentlyandconsensuson analysisandinterpretationarrivedatthroughteammeetings. Results:Asenseofboth‘empowerment’and‘community’weretheessencesoftheexperiencesofMBCEbothfor mothersandtheirbirthsupportpartnerandpermeatedthethemesof‘awakeningmyexistingpotential’and‘being inacommunityoflike-mindedparents’.ParticipantssuggestedthatmindfulnesstechniqueslearnedduringMBCE facilitatedtheirsenseofcontrolduringbirth,andthecontentandpedagog
