PartitioningofCH4andCO2ProductionOriginatingfrom RiceStraw,SoilandRootOrganicCarboninRice Microcosms QuanYuan,JudithPump,RalfConrad* Max-Planck-InstituteforTerrestrialMicrobiology,Marburg,Germany Abstract FloodedricefieldsareanimportantsourceofthegreenhousegasCH4.PossiblecarbonsourcesforCH4andCO2production in rice fields are soil organic matter (SOM), root organic carbon (ROC) and rice straw (RS), but partitioning of the flux between the different carbon sources is difficult. We conducted greenhouse experiments using soil microcosms planted withrice.Thesoilwasamendedwithandwithout 13C-labeledRS,usingtwo 13C-labeledRStreatmentswithequalRS(5g kg21 soil) butdifferent d13CofRS.Thisprocedure allowedtodeterminethecarbon fluxfromeachofthethreesources (SOM,ROC,RS)bydeterminingthed13CofCH4andCO2inthedifferentincubationsandfromthed13CofRS.Partitioningof carbonfluxindicatedthatthecontributionofROCtoCH4productionwas41%attilleringstage,increasedwithricegrowth andwasabout60%fromthebootingstageonwards.ThecontributionofROCtoCO2was43%attilleringstage,increased toaround70%atbootingstageandstayedrelativelyconstantafterwards.ThecontributionofRSwasdeterminedtobeina rangeof12–24%forCH4productionand11–31%forCO2production;whilethecontributionofSOMwascalculatedtobe 23–35%forCH4productionand13–26%forCO2 production.TheresultsindicatethatROCwasthemajorsourceofCH4 thoughRSapplicationgreatlyenhancedproductionandemissionofCH4inricefieldsoil.Ourresultsalsosuggestthatdata ofCH4dissolvedinricefieldcouldbeusedasaproxyfortheproducedCH4aftertilleringstage.
