TheRUPIOHstudy,anEU-fundedmulticentrestudy,wasdesignedtoexaminethedistributionofvariousambient particlemetricsinfourEuropeancities(Amsterdam,Athens,Birmingham,Helsinki)andassesstheirhealtheffectsin participantswithasthmaorCOPD,basedonadetailedexposureassessment.Inthispapertheassociationofcentral sitemeasurementswithrespiratorysymptomsandrestrictionofactivitiesisexamined. Methods:AteachcentreapanelofparticipantswitheitherasthmaorCOPDrecordedrespiratorysymptomsand restrictionofactivitiesinadiaryforsixmonths.Exposureassessmentincludedsimultaneousmeasurementsof coarse,fineandultrafineparticlesatacentralsite.Dataongaseouspollutantswerealsocollected.Theassociations ofthe24-houraverageconcentrationsofairpollutionindiceswiththehealthoutcomeswereassessedina hierarchicalmodellingapproach.Acityspecificanalysiscontrollingforpotentialconfounderswasfollowedbya meta-analysistoprovideoveralleffectestimates. Results:A10μg/m3increaseinpreviousdaycoarseparticlesconcentrationswaspositivelyassociatedwithmost symptoms(anincreaseof0.6to0.7%inaverage)andlimitationinwalking(OR=1.076,95%CI:1.026-1.128).Sameday, previousdayandprevioustwodaysozoneconcentrationswerepositivelyassociatedwithcough(OR=1.061,
