Methods:EDpatientsat10USmedicalcentersweresurveyedaboutpreferencesforhypotheticalsmoking cessationinterventionsandspecificcounselingstyles.Multivariablelinearregressiondeterminedcorrelatesof receptivitytobedsidecounseling. Results:Threehundredseventy-fivepatientswereenrolled;46%smokedatleastonepackofcigarettesperday, and11%hadasmoking-relateddiagnosis.Mostparticipants(75%)reportedinterestinatleastoneintervention. Medicationswerethemostpopular(e.g.,nicotinereplacementtherapy,54%),followedbylinkagestohotlinesor otheroutpatientcounseling(33-42%),thencounselingduringtheEDvisit(33%).Counselingstylesratedmost favorablyinvolvedindividualizedfeedback(54%),avoidanceskill-building(53%),andemphasisonautonomy(53%). Inunivariableanalysis,age(r=0.09),gender(averageLikertscore=2.75formen,2.42forwomen),education (averageLikertscore=2.92fornon-highschoolgraduates,2.44forhighschoolgraduates),andpresenceof smoking-relatedsymptoms(r=0.10)weresignificantatthep0.10levelandthuswereretainedforthefinal model.Inmultivariablelinearregression,malegender,lowereducation,andsmoking-relatedsymptomswere independentcorrelatesofincreasedreceptivitytoED-basedsmokingcounseling. Conclusions:Inthismulticenterstudy,smokersreportedreceptivitytoED-initiatedinterventions.However,there wasvariabilityinindividualpreferencesforinterventiontypeandcounselingstyles.Tobeeffectiveinreducing smokingamongitspatients,theEDshouldofferarangeoftobaccointerventionopti
