PatientOrganizations’FundingfromPharmaceutical Companies:IsDisclosureClear,CompleteandAccessible tothePublic?AnItalianSurvey CinziaColombo1*,PaolaMosconi1,WalterVillani1,SilvioGarattini2 1LaboratoryofMedicalResearchonConsumerInvolvement,DepartmentofOncology,IstitutodiRicercheFarmacologicheMarioNegri,Milano,Italy,2IstitutodiRicerche FarmacologicheMarioNegri,Milano,Italy Abstract Background:Manypatients’andconsumers’organizationsacceptdrugindustryfundingtosupporttheiractivities.Asdrug companiesandpatientgroupsmovecloser,disclosurebecomeessentialfortransparency,andtheinternetcouldbeauseful meansofmakingsponsorshipinformationaccessibletothepublic.Thissurveyaimstoassessthetransparencyofalarge groupofItalianpatientandconsumergroupsandagroupofpharmaceuticalcompanies,focusingontheirwebsites. Methodology/Principal Findings: Patient and consumer groups were selected from those stated to be sponsored by a groupofpharmaceuticalcompaniesontheirwebsites.Thewebsiteswereexaminedusingtwoformswithprincipal(name ofdrugcompaniesprovidingfunds,amountoffunding)andsecondaryindicatorsoftransparency(sectionwheresponsors aredisclosed,updateofsponsorship).Principalindicatorswereappliedindependentlybytworeviewerstothepatientand consumergroups’websites.Discordancesweresolvedbydiscussion.Onehundredfifty-sevenItalianpatientandconsumer groupsand17drugcompanieswereconsidered.Thirteendrugcompanies(76%)namedatleastonegroupfunded,ontheir Italianwebsites.Ofthese,four(31%)indicatedtheactivitiessponsoredandtwo(15%)theamountoffunding.Ofthe157 patient and consumer groups, 46 (29%) named at least one pharmaceutical company as providing funds. Three (6%) reported the amount of funding, 25 (54%) the activities funded, none the proportion of income derived from drug companies.Amongthegroupsnamingpharmaceuticalcompanysponsors,15(33%)declaredtheminadedicatedsection, five(11%)onthehomepage,theothersinthefinancialreportorothersections.
