Methods:104participantsunderwentfunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI)scanswhileperforminga phonologicalverbalfluencytask.Subjectswere32patientswithschizophreniainremission,32patientswith bipolardisorderinaneuthymicstate,and40healthyvolunteers.Neuralresponsestoverbalfluencywere examinedineachgroup,andthediagnosticpotentialofthepatternoftheneuralresponseswasassessedwith machinelearninganalysis. Results:Duringtheverbalfluencytask,bothpatientgroupsshowedincreasedactivationintheanteriorcingulate, leftdorsolateralprefrontalcortexandrightputamenascomparedtohealthycontrols,aswellasreduced deactivationofprecuneusandposteriorcingulate.Themagnitudeofactivationwasgreatestinpatientswith schizophrenia,followedbypatientswithbipolardisorderandthenhealthyindividuals.Additionalrecruitmentin therightinferiorfrontalandrightdorsolateralprefrontalcorticeswasobservedinschizophreniarelativetoboth bipolardisorderandhealthysubjects.Thepatternofneuralresponsescorrectlyidentifiedindividualpatientswith schizophreniawithanaccuracyof92%,andthosewithbipolardisorderwithanaccuracyof79%inwhichmis- classificationwastypicallyofbipolarsubjectsashealthycontrols. Conclusions:Insummary,bothschizophreniaandbipolardisorderareassociatedwithalteredfunctionin prefrontal,striatalanddefaultmodenetworks,butthemagnitudeofthisdysfunctionisparticularlym
