Methods:QuestionnairesweredistributedtoacupuncturistsofTCM(traditionalChinesemedicine)hospitalsand acupuncturistsattendingworkshopsandseminarsintheUnitedStatesandChina.Questionscoveredclinical significanceofdeqi,patientattitudeandthenatureofsomepain-relatedsensationselicitedbymanualneedling. Results:47outofatotalof86acupuncturistsagreedthatdullpainwasdeqiandoverhalfregardeditbeneficial, whilesharppainwasnon-deqiandharmfulinstead.Thepatients’attitudetowarddeqisensationshoweda differencebetweenUSandChina.Therewasnootherdimensionshowingadifference. Conclusion:Resultsofthispilotsurveyindicatethattheacupuncturists’perceptionisconsistentwithourprevious fMRIfindings.Resultsshowedalmostcompleteagreementthatdullpainisconsidereddeqiandbeneficialto treatment,whilesharppainisnotdeqiandharmful.Particularly,dullpainwasdeqiandwasbeneficialtotreatment whereassharppainwasnot.PatientsinChinalikedthedeqiexperiencewhereasthoseintheUSdidnot.
