Methods:Ratswereanesthetizedwithchloralhydrateandinflammationwasinducedbyintraplantarinjectionof carrageenan.Electroacupuncturewasperformedatauricularpointsbilaterally.Theseverityofinflammationwas assessedusingchangesinpawvolumeandthermalandmechanicalpainthresholdsoftheratsduringrecovery fromanesthesia. Results:Electroacupunctureatselectedauricularacupointssignificantlyreducedpawedemaandmechanical hyperalgesia,withnosignificanteffectonthermalhyperalgesia.Theanti-edematousandanalgesiceffectsofAA wereabolishedbyblockadeofperipheralcholinergicmuscarinicreceptorswithmethylatropine.Blockadeoflocal muscarinicreceptorsattheinflamedsitewithasmalldoseofatropinealsoantagonizedtheanti-edematouseffect ofAA.Bycontrast,systemicopioidreceptorblockadewithnaloxonedidnotantagonizetheanti-inflammatory effectsofAA. Conclusion:Thisstudydiscoversaroleofperipheralmuscarinicreceptorsinmediatingtheanti-inflammatory effectsofAA.Thecholinergicmuscarinicmechanismappearstobemoreimportantthantheopioidmechanismin theanti-inflammatoryactionofAA.
