Methods:Thephagocyticabilityofneutrophilsandmonocytesof42neonateswasdeterminedusingthe Phagotestflowcytometrymethod,thatassessestheintakeofE.Colibyphagocytes,incordbloodandin peripheralblood3daysafterbirth.Fifteenhealthyadultswereincludedinthestudyascontrols. Results:Thephagocyticabilityofneutrophilsinthecordbloodofneonateswassignificantlyreducedcompared toadults.The3rd postnataldaythereductionofphagocyticabilityofneutrophilswasnolongersignificant comparedtoadults.Thephagocyticabilityofmonocytesdidnotshowanydifferencefromthatofadultseitherat birthorthe3rd postnatalday. Conclusions:OurfindingsindicatethattheintakeofE.Colibyphagocytesisimpairedatbirthinbothpreterm andfulltermneonatescomparedtoadults.Thisdefectistransient,withthephagocyticabilityinneonates reachingthatoftheadults3daysafterbirth.
