PreparingthePerfectCuttlefishMeal:ComplexPrey HandlingbyDolphins JulianFinn1,2*,TomTregenza3,MarkNorman1 1Sciences, Museum Victoria, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 2Department of Zoology, La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia, 3Centre for Ecology and Conservation, SchoolofBiosciences,UniversityofExeter,CornwallCampus,Tremough,Penryn,UnitedKingdom Abstract Dolphinsarewellknownfortheircomplexsocialandforagingbehaviours.Directunderwaterobservationsofwilddolphin feedingbehaviourhoweverarerare.Atmassspawningaggregationsofgiantcuttlefish(Sepiaapama)intheUpperSpencer Gulf in South Australia, a wild female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) was observed and recorded repeatedlycatching,killingandpreparingcuttlefishforconsumptionusingaspecificandorderedsequenceofbehaviours. Cuttlefishwereherdedtoasandsubstrate,pinnedtotheseafloor,killedbydownwardthrust,raisedmid-waterandbeaten by the dolphin with its snout until the ink was released and drained. The deceased cuttlefish was then returned to the seafloor,invertedandforced alongthesand substrateinorder tostrip thethindorsal layerof skinoffthemantle, thus releasing the buoyant calcareous cuttlebone. This stepped behavioural sequence significantly improves prey quality through1)removaloftheink(withconstituentmelaninandtyrosine),and2)thecalcareouscuttlebone.Observationsof foragingdolphinpodsfromabove-wateratthissite(includingthesurfacingofintactcleancuttlebones)suggestthatsome orallofthispreyhandlingsequencemaybeusedwidelybydolphinsintheregion.Aspectsoftheuniquemassspawning aggregationsofgiantcuttlefishinthisregionofSouthAustraliamayhavecontributedtotheevolutionofthisbehaviour throughbothhighabundancesofspawningandweakenedpost-spawningcuttlefishinasmallarea(.10,000animalson severalkilometresofnarrowrockyreef),aswellaspotentiallong-termandregularvisitationbydolphinpodstothissite.
