Methods:Astudywascarriedoutin2007and2008toexaminetheprevalenceofA.phagocytophiluminfection andeffectonweaningweightinlambs.Thestudyincluded1208lambsfromfarmsinSunndalRamCircleinM?re andRomsdalCountyinMid-Norway,whereticksarefrequentlyobserved.Alllambswerebloodsampledand serumwasanalyzedbyanindirectfluorescentantibodyassay(IFA)todetermineanantibodystatus(positiveor negative)toA.phagocytophiluminfection.Weightandweightgainandpossibleeffectofinfectionwereanalyzed usingANOVAandtheMIXEDprocedureinSAS. Results:TheoverallprevalenceofinfectionwithA.phagocytophilumwas55%.Alowerweaningweightof3% (1.34kg,p0.01)wasestimatedinlambsseropositivetoanA.phagocytophiluminfectioncomparedto seronegativelambsatanaverageageof137days. Conclusions:TheresultsshowthatA.phagocytophiluminfectionhasaneffectonlambweightgain.Thestudy alsosupportpreviousfindingsthatA.phagocytophiluminfectioniswidespreadinareaswhereticksareprevalent, eveninflockstreatedprophylacticwithacaricides.
