Abstract
Background:Childrensfractureshavebeenenlistedamongorthopaedicscomplaintsofchildhoodobesity.
Unhealthylifestylebehavioursmaycontributetoincreasedrisk.Thisstudydescribedtheprevalenceofoverweight/
obesityinchildrenandadolescentsreportingarecentfractureinrelationtogender,dynamicoftrauma,andsiteof
fracture.
Methods:Four-hundred-forty-ninechildrenandadolescentswithfractureand130fracture-freecontrolswere
recruitedfromalargechildren’shospital.Theinteractionbetweenoverweightandgender,dynamicoftrauma,site
offracturewasexplored.Sportsparticipation,televisionviewing,andcalciumintakewerealsoinvestigated.
Results:Overweight/obesityratewasincreasedingirlswithfractureeitherattheupperorthelowerlimb(p=
0.004),whileitwasincreasedonlyinboyswithfractureatthelowerlimb(p0.02).Overweight/obesityratedidnot
differbetweengroupswithlowormoderatetrauma.TVviewing≥2hrswasmorefrequentinchildrenwith
fracturesthancontrols(61.5%vs34.5%,p=0.015)intheoverweight/obesegroup.
Conclusions:Theincreasedprevalenceofoverweight/obesityinchildrenwithfracturesisrelatedtogenderand
siteoffracture.Higherlevelsofsedentarybehaviourscharacterizeoverweightchildrenreportingfractures.
