LaraandOcampoJournalofOpthalmicInflammationandInfection2013,3:1 /content/3/1/1 ORIGINAL RESEARCH OpenAccess Prevalenceofpresumedoculartuberculosis amongpulmonarytuberculosispatientsina tertiaryhospitalinthePhilippines LeonPaoloRLara*andVicenteOcampoJr Abstract Background:Theobjectiveofthisstudywastodeterminetheprevalenceofpresumedoculartuberculosisamong diagnosedpulmonarytuberculosispatientsinatertiarygovernmenthospitalinthePhilippinesanddetermineits commonpresentationinthepopulation.Thiswasacross-sectionalstudyinwhich103patientswhowerelabeled tohaveactivepulmonarytuberculosisunderwenthistoryandocularexaminationpriortoanti-tuberculartherapy. Thediagnosisofpresumedoculartuberculosiswasmadewhenclinicalsignsoftuberculosis(TB)uveitiswerefound intheparticipants.Lesionsweredocumentedandtallied,afterwhichstatisticalanalysiswasperformed. Results:Sevenoutofthe103pulmonaryTBpatients(6.8%prevalence:95%CI2.78%to13.5%)includedinthe studyshowedsignsofocularinflammation.Therewasnosexandagepredilectionbetweenthosewithpresumed ocularTBandthosewithout.Posterioruveitisalonewasobservedinthreeofthepatients(twocasesofretinal vasculitisandonecaseofchoroidaltubercle).Non-granulomatousanterioruveitiswithposteriorsynechiaealone wasobservedintwopatients.Onepatienthadcombinednon-granulomatousanterioruveitiswithposterior synechiaeandchoroidaltubercle.Onehadcombinedgranulomatousanterioruveitiswithposteriorsynechiaeand choroidaltubercle.Intermediateuveitiswasnotnotedamongthepatients. Conclusions:Presumedoculartuberculosisshouldbeconsideredamongpatientswithdiagnosedpulmonary tuberculosis.Commonocularlesionsfoundinthestudyincludechoroidaltubercleandnon-granulomatousanterior uveitiswithposteriorsynechiae.
