Abstract
Thegrowingglobalburdenofnoncommunicablediseases(NCDs)isnowkilling36millionpeopleeachyearand
needsurgentandcomprehensiveaction.Thisarticleprovidesanoverviewofkeycriticalissuesthatneedtobe
resolvedtoensurethatrecentpoliticalcommitmentsaretranslatedintopracticalaction.Theseinclude:(i)
categorizingandprioritizingNCDsinordertoinformdonorfundingcommitmentsandprioritiesforintervention;
(ii)findingtherightbalancebetweentherelativeimportanceoftreatmentandpreventiontoensurethatresponses
coverthoseatrisk,andthosewhoarealreadysick;(iii)definingtheappropriatehealthsystemsresponsetoaddress
theneedsofpatientswithdiseasescharacterizedbylongdurationandoftenslowprogression;(iv)researchneeds,
inparticulartranslationalresearchinthedeliveryofcare;and(v)sustainedfundingtosupporttheglobalNCD
response.
