Methods:Datawerecollectedbyhospital-basedinterviews.Newbornswereweighedandmeasured.Gestational agewasdefinedaccordingtothedateoflastmenstrualperiod,ultra-soundscanbeforethe20thweekof pregnancyortheDubowitzmethod.MotherswhoreportedatleastoneLBWnewborninthetwoprevious gestationswereincluded.Prevalenceratios(PR)and95%confidenceintervalswereestimatedfromPoisson Regression.Allestimateswereadjustedforparity. Results:Atotalof4558birthswereidentifiedin2004,and565metinclusioncriteria,outofwhich86(15.2%) repeatedLBWin2004.AmongmotherswithtwoLBWbabiesbefore2004,47.9%presentedLBWrecurrence. Belongingtothehighestsocio-economicstratum(PR0.89;0.01-0.46)andgaining≥10kgduringpregnancy(PR 0.09;0.01-0.77)wereprotectiveagainstLBWrecurrence.HigherriskofLBWrecurrencewasobservedamong motherswithhigherparity(≥3previousdeliveries;PR=1.93;95%CI1.23-3.02);whohadgivenbirthtoaprevious pretermbaby(PR=4.01;2.27-7.10);whodeliveredafemalenewbornincurrentgestation(PR=2.61;1.45-4.69);and thathadnotreceivedadequateantenatalcare(PR=2.57;1-37-4.81). Conclusion:Improvedqualityofantenatalcareandadequatematernalweightgainduringpregnancymaybe feasiblestrategiestopreventLBWrepetitioninsuccessivepregnancies.
