Recent progress in the studies on the isolation, synthesis, structure- activity relationship studies, biological activities and metabolism of rutaecarpine are reviewed. Keywords: Alkaloid, Rutaceae, rutaecarpine. 1. Introduction Herbs have been widely employed as important remedies all over the world [1]. Progress in science and technology in recent decades has made possible not only to isolate and characterize the biologically active constituents of herbs, but also to evaluate their biological activities. Rutaceous plants, especially Evodia rutaecarpa (whose dried fruit is named ‘Wu-Chu-Yu’ in China), have long been used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, headache, amenorrhea, and postpartum hemorrhage in traditional oriental medicine [2].
