Methods:Seventeenpeoplewithadiagnosisofschizophreniaandwhohadusedstreetdrugswereinterviewed andaskedtodescribe,innarrativeform,theirstreetdrugusefromtheirearlyexperiencestothepresentday. Groundedtheorywasusedtoanalysethetranscripts. Results:Weidentifiedfivereasonsforcontinuingstreetdruguse.Thereasonswere:asan‘identitydefining vocation’,‘tobelongtoapeergroup’,dueto‘hopelessness’,becauseof‘beliefsaboutsymptomsandhowstreet drugsinfluencethem’andviewingdrugsas‘equivalenttotakingpsychotropicmedication’.Streetdrugswere oftenusedtoreduceanxietyarousedbyvoicehearing.Someparticipantsreportedstreetdrugstofocustheir attentionmoreonpersecutoryvoicesinthehopeofoutwittingtheirperceivedpersecutors. Conclusions:Itwouldbeclinicallyusefultoexamineforthepresenceofthefivefactorsinpatientswhohavea diagnosisofschizophreniaandusestreetdrugs,asthisislikelytohelpthecliniciantotailormanagementof substancemisusetotheindividualpatient’ sbeliefs.
