Following recruitment, some randomized individuals declinetobeenrolledinanHIVvaccinetrial.Thereasonsforsuchadecisionarenotwellknown.Thisarticledescribeswhy individualswhowererandomizedinaphaseIandIIHIVvaccinetrialinDaresSalaam,Tanzaniadeclinedtobeenrolled. Methods:Face-to-faceinterviewswereconductedwith14individuals(7menand7women).Repeatedreadingsofthe14 interviewtranscriptstolookforreasonsfordecliningtoenrollinthetrialwereperformed.Datawasanalyzedusingthe contentanalysisapproach. Results:InformantsexpressedfearoftheoutcomeofanexperimentalHIVvaccineintheirlives.Unlikewomen,somemen were concerned over the effect of the vaccine on their reproduction intentions. Women were concerned about the unknowneffectsofthevaccineintheirbodies.Also,toalargeextent,informantsfacedresistancefromsignificantothers suchasfiance′es,parents,relatives,andfriends.Womenwereinfluencedbytheirpotentialintimatesexualpartners;men wereforbiddenbytheirparents,andmothershadthemostinfluentialopinion. Conclusions:Fearofthenegativeoutcomeofanexperimentalvaccineandresistancefromsignificantothersarethemain reasonsfordecliningtoenrollintheHIVvaccinetrialamongeligiblevolunteersafterrandomization.Theresistancefrom thesignif
