Methods:Across-sectionalsurveywasusedtoinvestigatethepsychologicalsymptomsassociatedwiththe aftermathofasnowstormdisasterintheHunanprovinceofChinainJanuary2008.StudentslivinginHunanwere surveyedatathree-monthfollow-upafterthedisaster.ThequestionnairebatteryincludedtheImpactofEvent Scale-Revised(IES-R,traumaandsymptomsassociatedwithPTSD),theChineseversionoftheLifeOrientationTest- Revised(LOT-R,optimismandpessimism),theChineseversionoftheEysenckPersonalityQuestionnaire(EPQ, neuroticismandextraversion),theChineseTraitCopingStyleQuestionnaire(TCSQ,positiveandnegativecoping styles),andarangeofquestionsaddressingsocialdemographiccharacteristicsandfactorsrelatingtothe snowstorm.Thesurveywasadministeredinschool,and968studentscompletedandreturnedthequestionnaires. Results:Theresultsshowedthat14.5%ofthestudentshadatotalIES-Rscore≥20.Studentswithgreaterschool- to-homedistancesshowedhigherlevelsofposttraumaticstresssymptomsthanstudentswholivedshorter distancesfromschool.Studentswithemotionalsupportfromtheirteachersreportedhigherlevelsofposttraumatic stresssymptoms(21.20%)thanstudentswithoutateacher’semotionalsupport(11.07%).TheIES-Rtotaland subscalescorescorrelatedwithallvariablesexceptextraversion.Thebinarylogisticregressionanalysisresults showedthattheteacher’semotionalsupport[oddsratio(OR)=1.72,95%confidenceinterval(CI)=1.13-2.62], school-to-homedistance(OR=1.01,95%CI=1.00-1.01),negativecoping(OR=1.05;95%CI=1.02-1.08),and neuroticism(OR=1.04,95%CI=1.02-1.06)wereriskfactorsthatpredictedPTSDfrequencyandseverity
