However,becausetheassessmentofPDistime-consuming,itisnotroutinelyassessedinthispopulation.Abrief screenfortheidentificationofyoungpeoplewhomightwarrantfurtherdetailedassessmentofPDcouldbe particularlyvaluableforcliniciansandresearchersworkinginjuvenilejusticesettings. Method:WeadaptedarapidscreenfortheidentificationofPDinadults(StandardisedAssessmentof Personality–AbbreviatedScale;SAPAS)forusewithadolescentsandthencarriedoutastudyofthereliabilityand validityoftheadaptedinstrumentinasampleof80adolescentboysinsecureinstitutions.Participantswere administeredthescreenandshortlyafteranestablisheddiagnosticinterviewforDSM-IVPDs.Ninedayslaterthe screenwasreadministered. Results:Ascoreof3ormoreonthescreeninginterviewcorrectlyidentifiedthepresenceofDSM-IVPDin86%of participants,yieldingasensitivityandspecificityof0.87and0.86respectively.Internalconsistencywasmodestbut comparabletotheoriginalinstrument.9-daystest-retestreliabilityforthetotalscorewasexcellent.Convergent validitycorrelationswiththetotalnumberofPDcriteriawerelarge. Conclusion:Thisstudyprovidespreliminaryevidenceofthevalidity,reliability,andusefulnessofthescreenin secureinstitutionsforadolescentmaleoffenders.Itcanbeusedinjuvenileoffenderinstitutionswithlimited resources,asabrief,acceptable,staff-administeredroutinescreentoidentifyindividualsinneedoffurther assessmentofPDorbyresearchersconductingepidemiologicalsurveys.
