Methods:Apiezoelectricmicrocantileverwasinsulatedwithparyleneand demonstratedasanendothelializationdetectorforincorporationwithinanactive coronarystent.Afterinitialcharacterization,endothelialcellswereplatedontothe cantileversurface.Aftertheyattachedtothesurface,theycausedanincreasein mass,andthusadecreaseintheresonantfrequenciesofthecantilever.Thisshift wasthendetectedelectricallywithanLCRmeter.Theself-sensing,self-actuating cantileverdoesnotrequireanexternal,opticaldetectionsystem,thusallowingfor implantedapplications. Results:Acelldensityof1300cells/mm2onthecantileversurfaceisdetected. Conclusions:Wehavedevelopedaself-actuating,self-sensingdevicefordetecting thepresenceofendothelialcellsonasurface.Thedeviceisbiocompatibleand functionsreliablyinionicliquids,makingitappropriateforimplantableapplications. Thissensorcanbeplacedalongthestrutsofacoronarystenttodetectwhenthe strutshavebeencoveredwithalayerofendothelialcellsandarenolongeravailable surfacesforclotformation.Anti-platelettherapycanbeadjustedinreal-timewith respecttoapatient’slevelofhealingandhemorrhagingrisks. Background Coronarystents,whichareroutinelyusedto treatblockedarteries,arerecognizedby the body as foreign objects and can incite an immune response and cause re-occlu- sionoftheartery.T
