Planteetal.BMCPsychiatry2012,12:146 /1471-244X/12/146 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Sex-relateddifferencesinsleepslowwaveactivity inmajordepressivedisorder:ahigh-densityEEG investigation DavidTPlante*,EricCLandsness,MichaelJPeterson,MichaelRGoldstein,BradyARiedner,TimothyWanger, JeffreyJGuokas,GiulioTononiandRuthMBenca Abstract Background:Sleepdisturbanceplaysanimportantroleinmajordepressivedisorder(MDD).Priorinvestigations havedemonstratedthatslowwaveactivity(SWA)duringsleepisalteredinMDD;however,resultshavenotbeen consistentacrossstudies,whichmaybedueinparttosex-relateddifferencesinSWAand/orlimitedspatial resolutionofspectralanalyses.ThisstudysoughttocharacterizeSWAinMDDutilizinghigh-density electroencephalography(hdEEG)toexaminethetopographyofSWAacrossthecortexinMDD,aswellas sex-relatedvariationinSWAtopographyinthedisorder. Methods:All-nightrecordingswith256channelhdEEGwerecollectedin30unipolarMDDsubjects(19women) and30ageandsex-matchedcontrolsubjects.SpectralanalysesofSWAwereperformedtodeterminegroup differences.SWAwascomparedbetweenMDDandcontrols,includinganalysesstratifiedbysex,usingstatistical non-parametricmappingtocorrectformultiplecomparisonsoftopographicdata. Results:Asagroup,MDDsubjectsdemonstratedsignificantincreasesinall-nightSWAprimarilyinbilateral prefrontalchannels.Whenstratifiedbysex,MDDwomendemonstratedglobalincreasesinSWArelativeto age-matchedcontrolsthatweremostconsistentinbilateralprefrontalregions;however,MDDmenshowedno significantdifferencesrelativetoage-matchedcontrols.FurtheranalysesdemonstratedincreasedSWAinMDD womenwasmostprominentinthefirstportionofthenight. Conclusions:Women,butnotmenwithMDDdemonstratesignificantincreasesinSWAinmultiplecorticalareas relativetocontrolsubjects.FurtherresearchiswarrantedtoinvestigatetheroleofSWAinMDD,andtoclarifyhow increasedSWAinwomenwithMDDisrelatedtothepathophysiologyofthedisorder.
