Proliferating cells partly escape this type of negativeregulationbyexpressingshorter39UTRs,depletedofmicroRNAbindingsites,comparedtonon-proliferatingcells. Using large-scale gene expression datasets, we show that a similar phenomenon takes place in breast and lung cancer: tumorsexpressingshorter39UTRstendtobemoreaggressiveandtoresultinshorterpatientsurvival.Moreover,weshow thatageneexpressionsignaturebasedonlyontheexpressionratioofalternative39UTRsisastrongpredictorofsurvivalin bothtumors.Genesundergoing39UTRshorteninginaggressivetumorsofthetwotissuessignificantlyoverlap,andseveral ofthemareknowntobeinvolvedintumorprogression.Howeverthepatternof39UTRshorteninginaggressivetumorsin vivoisclearlydistinctfromanalogouspatternsinvolvedinproliferationandtransformation.
