ShrimpsDownUnder:EvolutionaryRelationshipsof SubterraneanCrustaceansfromWesternAustralia (Decapoda:Atyidae:Stygiocaris) TimothyJ.Page1*,WilliamF.Humphreys2,JaneM.Hughes1 1AustralianRiversInstitute,GriffithUniversity,Nathan,Queensland,Australia,2WesternAustralianMuseum,WelshpoolDC,WesternAustralia,Australia Abstract Background: We investigated the large and small scale evolutionary relationships of the endemic Western Australian subterraneanshrimpgenusStygiocaris(Atyidae)usingnuclearandmitochondrialgenes.Stygiocarisispartoftheunique cavebiotaofthecoastal,anchialine,limestonesoftheCapeRangeandBarrowIsland,mostofwhosenearestevolutionary relationsarefoundincoastalcavesofthedistantNorthAtlantic.Thedominanceofatyidsintropicalwatersandtheirfood resourcessuggesttheyarepivotalinunderstandingthesegroundwaterecosystems. Methodology/PrincipleFindings:OurnuclearandmitochondrialanalysesallrecoveredtheMexicancavegenusTyphlatya asthesistertaxonofStygiocaris,ratherthananyofthenumeroussurfaceandcaveatyidsfromAustraliaortheIndo-Pacific region.ThetwodescribedStygiocarisspecieswererecoveredasmonophyletic,andathird,cryptic,specieswasdiscovered atasinglesite,whichhasverydifferentphysiochemicalpropertiesfromthesiteshostingthetwodescribedspecies. Conclusions/Significance:OurfindingssuggestthatStygiocarisandTyphlatyamaydescendfromacommonancestorthat lived in the coastal marine habitat of the ancient Tethys Sea, and were subsequently separated by plate tectonic movements.Thisvicariantprocessiscommonlythoughttoexplainthemanydisjunctanchialinefaunas,buthasrarelybeen demonstratedusingphylogenetictechniques.TheCapeRange’sgeologicaldynamism,whichisprobablyresponsiblefor thespeciationofthevariousStygiocarisspecies,hasalsoledtogeographicpopulationstructurewithinspecies.Inparticular, Stygiocarislanciferaissplitintonorthernandsoutherngroups,whichcorrespondtopopulationsplitswithinothersympatric subterraneantaxa.
