Engineering,161LouisPasteur, UniversityofOttawa,K1N6N5, Ottawa,Ontario,Canada Methods:Analgorithmispresentedforthequantificationofhigh-frequency,non- deterministiceventssuchascavitationfromrecordedsignals.Aclosed-form mathematicalanalysisofthealgorithminvestigatesitscapabilities.Thealgorithmis implementedonrealheartsignalstoinvestigateusabilityandimplementationissues. Improvementsaresuggestedtothebasealgorithmincludingaligningheartsounds, andtheimplementationoftheShort-TimeFourierTransformtostudythetime evolutionoftheenergyinthesignal. Results:Theimprovementsresultinbetterheartbeatalignmentandbetter detectionandmeasurementoftherandomeventsintheheartsignals,sothatthey mayprovideamethodtoquantifynondeterministiceventsinheartsignals.Theuse oftheShort-TimeFourierTransformallowstheexaminationoftherandomeventsin bothtimeandfrequencyallowingforfurtherinvestigationandinterpretationofthe signal. Conclusions:Thepresentedalgorithmdoesallowforthequantificationof nondeterministiceventsbutpropercareinsignalacquisitionandprocessingmust betakentoobtainmeaningfulresults. 1.Background Listeningtotheheartisperhapsthemostimportant,basic,andeffectiveclinicaltech- nique for evaluating a patient’s cardiovascular function.
