Findings:Visualacuitywas20/20inbotheyes,andtheanteriorsegmentwasnormalinbotheyeswithoutrelative afferentpupillarydefect.Fundoscopyrevealedswellingoftheleftopticdisc.Opticcoherencetomographyandthe Heidelbergretinatomographconfirmedandquantifiedtheoedemaoftheleftopticdisc.Anaudiometryshoweda leftsensorineuraldeafness.SerologicalexaminationsdisclosedconfirmedHIVandsyphilisinfection.Magnetic resonanceimagingofthebrainshowednoabnormalities.Properlytreatedwithintravenouspenicillin,thelesions resolved. Conclusions:SimultaneousopticandauditiveinvolvementcanbethefirstmanifestationofsyphiliticandHIV coinfection.Toourknowledge,thisreportisthefirsttodescribetherareoccurrenceofsyphiliticopticneuritisand ipsilateralaffectationofthevestibulocochlearnerve.
