Epidemiologicalstudiesinadultsontheeffectsofsmokingonallergicdiseasesotherthanasthma,suchaseczema andrhinoconjunctivitis,havebeenlimited,andtheinformationthatisavailablehasbeeninconsistent.Theaimof thisstudywastoinvestigatetheassociationbetweensmokingstatusandenvironmentaltobaccosmoke(ETS) exposureandtheprevalenceofallergicdiseases. Methods:Studysubjectswere1743pregnantJapanesewomen.Thedefinitionsofwheezeandasthmawere basedoncriteriafromtheEuropeanCommunityRespiratoryHealthSurveywhereasthoseofeczemaand rhinoconjunctivitiswerebasedoncriteriafromtheInternationalStudyofAsthmaandAllergiesinChildhood. Adjustmentwasmadeforage;regionofresidence;familyhistoryofasthma,atopiceczema,andallergicrhinitis; householdincome;andeducation. Results:Comparedwithneversmoking,currentsmokingand≥4pack-yearsofsmokingwereindependently positivelyassociatedwiththeprevalenceofwheeze.Therewerenoassociationsbetweensmokingstatusandthe prevalenceofasthma,eczema,orrhinoconjunctivitis.Whensubjectswhohadneversmokedwereclassifiedinto fourcategoriesbasedonthesourceofETSexposure(never,onlyathome,onlyatwork,andboth),exposure occurringbothathomeandatworkwasindependentlyassociatedwithanincreasedprevalenceoftwo outcomes:wheezeandrhinoconjunctivitis.NorelationshipswereobservedbetweenexposuretoETSandthe prevalenceofasthmaoreczema. Conclusions:OurresultsprovideevidencethatcurrentsmokingandETSexposuremayincreasethelikelihoodof wheeze.ThepossibilityofapositiveassociationbetweenETSexposureandrhinoconjunctivitiswasalsosuggested.
