Our model appeals to a single principle – the minimisationofvariationalfreeenergy–toprovideBayesoptimalsolutionstothesmoothpursuitproblem.However,it tries to accommodate the cardinal features of smooth pursuit of partially occluded targets that have been observed empiricallyinnormalsubjectsandschizophrenia.Specifically,weaccountfortheabilityofnormalsubjectstoanticipate periodictargettrajectoriesandemitpre-emptivesmoothpursuiteyemovements–priortotheemergenceofatargetfrom behindanoccluder.Furthermore,weshowthatasingledeficitinthepostsynapticgainofpredictionerrorunits(encoding theprecisionofposteriorbeliefs)canaccountforseveralfeaturesofsmoothpursuitinschizophrenia:namely,areductionin motorgainandanticipatoryeyemovementsduringvisualocclusion,aparadoxicalimprovementintrackingunpredicted deviationsfromtargettrajectoriesandafailuretorecogniseandexploitregularitiesintheperiodicmotionofvisualtargets. Thismodelwillformthebasisofsubsequent(dynamiccausal)modelsofempiricaleyetrackingmeasurements,whichwe hopetovalidate,usingpsychopharmacologyandstudiesofschizophrenia.
