Children’snursesplayanimportantroleintobaccopreventiveworkthroughdialoguewithparentsaimedat identifyinghowchildrencanbeprotectedfromenvironmentaltobaccosmoke(ETS)exposure.Thestudydescribes theexperiencesofChildHealthCare(CHC)nurseswhenusingthevalidatedinstrumentSiCET(Smokingin Children’sEnvironmentTest)indialoguewithparents. Method:InaninterventioninCHCcentresinsouth-easternSwedennurseswereinvitedtousetheSiCET. Eighteennursesparticipatedinfocusgroupinterviews.Transcriptswerereviewedandtheircontentswerecoded intocategoriesbythreeinvestigatorsusingthemethoddescribedforfocusgroupsinterviews. Results:TheSiCETwasusedindialoguewithparentsintobaccopreventiveworkandresultedinfocused discussionsonsmokingandsupportforbehaviouralchangesamongparents.Theinstrumenthadbothstrengths andlimitations.ThenursesexperiencedthattheSiCETfacilitateddialoguewithparentsandgaveacomprehensive viewofthechild’sETSexposure.Thisgavenursesthepossibilityoftakingonasupportiverolebyofferingparents long-termhelpinprotectingtheirchildfromETSexposureandinconsideringsmokingcessation. Conclusion:OurfindingsindicatethattheSiCETsupportsnursesintheirdialoguewithparentsonchildren’ sETS exposureatCHC.ThereisaneedformoreclinicaluseandevaluationoftheSiCETtodetermineitsusefulnessin clinicalpracticeundervaryingcircumstances.
