Methods:Inthecurrentstudy,a2Daxialfiniteelementmodelwasdevelopedand validatedtodescribethespatialtemperaturedistributionintheskinafterinfrared CO2laserstimulation.Thegeometryofthemodelwasbasedonhighresolution ultrasoundscans.Thesimulationswerecomparedtothesubjectivepainintensity ratingsfrom16subjectsandtothesurfaceskintemperaturedistributionsmeasured byaninfraredcamera. Results:Thestimulationsweresensedsignificantlyslowerandlessintensein glabrousskinthantheywereinhairyskin(MANOVA,p0.001).Themodel simulationsofsuperficialtemperaturecorrelatedwiththemeasuredskinsurface temperature(r0.90,p0.001).Ofthe16subjectstested;eightsubjectsreported prickingpaininthehairyskinfollowingastimulusof0.6J/cm2(5W,0.12s,d1/e2= 11.4mm)onlytworeportedpaintoglabrousskinstimulationusingthesame stimulusintensity.Thetemperatureattheepidermal-dermaljunction(depth50μm inhairyanddepth133μminglabrousskin)wasestimatedto46°Cforhairyskin stimulationand39°Cforglabrousskinstimulation. Conclusions:Ascomparedtopreviousonedimensionalheatdistributionmodels, thecurrenttwodimensionalmodelprovidesnewpossibilitiesfordetailedstudies regardingCO2laserstimulationintensity,temperaturelevelsandnociceptor activation.
