Abstract mak@ncl.ac.uk 2SchoolofElectrical,Electronicand ComputerEngineering,Newcastle University,NewcastleuponTyne Background:Principalcomponentanalysis(PCA)hasbeenwidelyemployedfor automaticneuronalspikesorting.Calculatingprincipalcomponents(PCs)is NE47RU,UK Fulllistofauthorinformationis availableattheendofthearticle computationallyexpensive,andrequirescomplexnumericaloperationsandlarge memoryresources.Substantialhardwareresourcesarethereforeneededfor hardwareimplementationsofPCA.GeneralHebbianalgorithm(GHA)hasbeen proposedforcalculatingPCsofneuronalspikesinourpreviouswork,which eliminatestheneedsofcomputationallyexpensivecovarianceanalysisand eigenvaluedecompositioninconventionalPCAalgorithms.However,largememory resourcesarestillinherentlyrequiredforstoringalargevolumeofalignedspikesfor trainingPCs.Thelargesizememorywillconsumelargehardwareresourcesand contributesignificantpowerdissipation,whichmakeGHAdifficulttobe implementedinportableorimplantablemulti-channelrecordingmicro-systems. Method:Inthispaper,wepresentanewalgorithmforPCA-basedspikesorting basedonGHA,namelystream-basedHebbianeigenfilter,whicheliminatesthe inherentmemoryrequirementsofGHAwhilekeepingtheaccuracyofspikesorting byutilizingthepseudo-stationarityofneuronalspikes.Becauseofthereductionof largehardwarestoragerequirements,theproposedalgorithmcanleadtoultra-low hardwareresourcesandpowerconsumptionofhardwareimplementations,whichis criticalforthefuturemulti-channelmicro-systems.Bothclinicalandsyntheticneural recordingdatasetswereemployedforevaluatingtheaccuracyofthestream-based Hebbianeigenfilter.Theperformanceofspikesortingusingstream-basedeigenfilter andthecomputationalcomplexityoftheeigenfilterwererigorouslyevaluatedand comparedwithconventionalPCAalg
