Methods:Asystematicsearchwasconductedforpublished,structuralvoxel-basedmorphometricMRIstudiesin patientswithFESorFTLD.Datawerecombinedusinganatomicallikelihoodestimation(ALE)todeterminethe extentofgraymatterdecreasesandanalysedtoascertainthedegreeofoverlapinthespatialdistributionofbrain changesinbothdiseases. Results:Datawereextractedfrom18FESstudies(includingatotalof555patientsand621comparisonsubjects) and20studiesofFTLDorrelateddisorders(includingatotalof311patientsand431comparisonsubjects).The similarityinspatialoverlapofbrainchangesinthetwodisorderswassignificant(p=0.001).Graymatterdeficits commontobothdisordersincludedbilateralcaudate,leftinsulaandbilateraluncusregions. Conclusions:ThereisasignificantoverlapinthedistributionofstructuralbrainchangesinFirstEpisode SchizophreniaandFronto-TemporalLobarDegeneration.Thismayreflectoverlappingaetiologies,oracommon vulnerabilityoftheseregionstothedistinctaetio-pathologicalprocessesinthetwodisorders.
