Methods:368and316secondaryschoolstudents,fromeachcountryrespectively,participated.Self-reported suicidalexpressions,exposuretosuicidalbehaviorinsignificantothersandmentalhealthproblemsamongthe studentsweremeasuredusingAttitudeTowardsSuicide(ATTS)andtheYouthSelf-Report(YSR)questionnaires. Results:Prevalenceofserioussuicidalexpressions(plansandattempts)duringrecentyear,didnotdifferbetween countries.CambodianyoungpeoplescoredsignificantlyhigheronalleightYSR-syndromes,exceptforwithdrawn/ depressed.InNicaragua,allYSR-syndromesweresignificantlyassociatedwithserioussuicidalexpressionsinboth genderscomparedtoCambodiawhereonlyonesyndromeshowedanassociationineachgender;Withdrawn/ depressedamonggirlsandSomaticcomplaintsamongboys.Associationsbetweenbeingexposedtosuicide amongsignificantothersandserioussuicidalexpressionsalsodifferedbetweenCambodiaandNicaragua. Conclusions:Whilethemagnitudeofserioussuicidalexpressionsissimilarbetweenthesestructurallysimilarbut culturallydifferentcountries,determinantsbehavedifferently.Qualitativestudiesarewarrantedtofurtherexplore culturalspecificdeterminantsforsuicidalexpressionsamongyoungpeople.
