Sharpetal.AnnalsofGeneralPsychiatry2011,10:14 /content/10/1/14 REVIEW OpenAccess Theuseofvideoconferencingwithpatientswith psychosis:areviewoftheliterature IanRSharp1*,KennethAKobak1,2 andDouglasAOsman1 Abstract Videoconferencinghasbecomeanincreasinglyviabletoolinpsychiatry,withagrowingbodyofliteratureonits usewitharangeofpatientpopulations.Anumberoffactorsmakeitparticularlywellsuitedforpatientswith psychosis.Forexample,patientslivinginremoteorunderservedareascanbeseenbyaspecialistwithoutneedfor travel.However,thehallmarksymptomsofpsychoticdisordersmightleadonetoquestionthefeasibilityof videoconferencingwiththesepatients.Forexample,doesvideoconferencingexacerbatedelusions,suchas paranoiaordelusionsofreference?Areacutelypsychoticpatientswillingtobeinterviewedremotelyby videoconferencing?Toaddresstheseandotherissues,weconductedanextensivereviewofMedline,PsychINFO, andtheTelemedicineInformationExchangedatabasesforliteratureonvideoconferencingandpsychosis.Findings generallyindicatedthatassessmentandtreatmentviavideoconferencingisequivalenttoinpersonandis toleratedandwellaccepted.Thereislittleevidencethatpatientswithpsychosishavedifficultywith videoconferencingorexperienceanyexacerbationofsymptoms;infact,thereissomeevidencetosuggestthat thedistanceaffordedcanbeapositivefactor.Theresultsoftwolargeclinicaltrialssupportthereliabilityand effectivenessofcentralizedremoteassessmentofpatientswithschizophrenia.
