Methods:WeestimatedPM2.5exposureforpopulationsinadministrativehealthareasusingmeasurementsfrom centralmonitors.Remotesensingdataonfireswereusedtoclassifythepopulationsasfire-affectedornon-fire- affected,andtoidentifyextremefiredays.Dailycountsofsalbutamoldispensationsbetween2003and2010were extractedfromtheBCPharmaNetdatabase.Weestimatedrateratios(RR)and95%confidenceintervals(CIs)for eachpopulationduringallfireseasonsandonextremefiredays,adjustedfortemperature,humidity,andtemporal trends.Overalleffectsforfire-affectedandnon-fire-affectedpopulationswereestimatedviameta-regression. Results:FireseasonPM2.5waspositivelyassociatedwithsalbutamoldispensationsinallfire-affectedpopulations, withameta-regressionRR(95%CI)of1.06(1.04-1.07)fora10ug/m3increase.FireseasonPM2.5wasnot significantlyassociatedwithsalbutamoldispensationsinnon-fire-affectedpopulations,withameta-regressionRRof 1.00(0.98-1.01).OnextremefiredaysPM2.5waspositivelyassociatedwithsalbutamoldispensationsinboth populationtypes,withaglobalmeta-regressionRRof1.07(1.04-1.09). Conclusions:Salbutamoldispensationswereclearlyassociatedwithfire-relatedPM2.5.Significantassociationswere observedinsmallerpopulations(range:8,000to170,000persons,median:26,000)thanthosereportedpreviously, suggestingthatsalbutamoldispensationsmaybeavaluableoutcomeforpublichealthsurveillanceduringfire events.
