Fryeetal.BMCPediatrics2011,11:37 /1471-2431/11/37 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Traditionalandnon-traditionaltreatmentsfor autismspectrumdisorderwithseizures:anon- linesurvey RichardEFrye1*,SwapnaSreenivasula2andJamesBAdams3 Abstract Background:Despitethehighprevalenceofseizure,epilepsyandabnormalelectroencephalogramsinindividuals withautismspectrumdisorder(ASD),thereislittleinformationregardingtherelativeeffectivenessoftreatments forseizuresintheASDpopulation.Inordertodeterminetheeffectivenessoftraditionalandnon-traditional treatmentsforimprovingseizuresandinfluencingotherclinicalfactorrelevanttoASD,wedevelopeda comprehensiveon-lineseizuresurvey. Methods:Announcements(byemailandwebsites)byASDsupportgroupsaskedparentsofchildrenwithASDto completetheon-linesurveys.Surveyresponderschooseoneoftwosurveystocomplete:asurveyabout treatmentsforindividualswithASDandclinicalorsubclinicalseizuresorabnormalelectroencephalograms,ora controlsurveyforindividualswithASDwithoutclinicalorsubclinicalseizuresorabnormalelectroencephalograms. Surveyrespondersratedtheperceivedeffectoftraditionalantiepilepticdrug(AED),non-AEDseizuretreatments andnon-traditionalASDtreatmentsonseizuresandotherclinicalfactors(sleep,communication,behavior, attentionandmood),andlisteduptothreetreatmentsideeffects. Results:Responseswereobtainedconcerning733childrenwithseizuresand290controls.Ingeneral,AEDswere perceivedtoimproveseizuresbutworsenedotherclinicalfactorsforchildrenwithclinicalseizure.Valproicacid, lamotrigine,levetiracetamandethosuximidewereperceivedtoimproveseizuresthemostandworsenother clinicalfactorstheleastoutofallAEDsinchildrenwithclinicalseizures.Traditionalnon-AEDseizureandnon- traditionaltreatments,asagroup,wereperceivedtoimproveotherclinicalfactorsandseizuresbuttheperceived improvementinseizureswassignificantlylessthanthatreportedforAEDs.Certaintraditionalnon-AEDtreatments, particularlytheketogenicdiet,wereperceivedtoimprovebothseizuresandotherclinicalfactors.
