Methods:TwocrosssectionalstudiesoftheAustralianDefenceForcewereusedtocontrasttheprevalenceof exposuresreportedbyagroupdeployedonapeacekeepingoperation(Bougainville,n=1704)andthosereported byagroupdeployedonoperationswhichincludedwarlikeandnon-warlikeexposures(EastTimor,n=1333).A principalcomponentsanalysiswasusedtoidentifygroupingsofnon-traumaticexposuresondeployment.Multiple regressionmodelswereusedtoassesstheassociationbetweenself-reportedobjectiveandsubjectiveexposures, stressorsondeploymentandsubsequentphysicalandmentalhealthoutcomes. Results:Theprincipalcomponentsanalysisproducedfourgroupsofnon-traumaticstressorswhichwereconsistent betweenthepeacekeepingandmorewarlikedeployments.Thesewerelabelled‘separation’,‘differentculture’, ‘otherpeople’and‘workfrustration’.Higherlevelsoftraumaticandnon-traumaticexposureswerereportedby veteransofEastTimorcomparedtoBougainville.Higherlevelsofsubjectivetraumaticexposureswereassociated withincreasedratesofPTSDinEastTimorveteransandmorephysicalandpsychologicalhealthsymptomsinboth deployedgroups.InBougainvilleandEastTimorveteranssomenon-traumaticdeploymentstressorswerealso associatedwithworsehealthoutcomes. Conclusion:Strategiestobestprepare,identifyandtreatthoseexposedtotraumaticeventsandotherstressorson deploymentshouldbeconsideredforDefencepersonneldeployedonbothwarlikeandpeacekeepingoperations.
