Methods:WeanalyzedmortalitydatafromtheS?oPauloStateDataAnalysisSystem,selectingalldeath certificatesonwhichDMorPMwaslistedasacauseofdeath.Thevariablessex,ageandunderlying,associatedor totalmentionsofcausesofdeathwerestudiedusingmortalityrates,proportionsandhistoricaltrends.Statistical analysiswereperformedbychi-squareandHKruskal-Wallistests,varianceanalysisandlinearregression.Apvalue lessthan0.05wasregardedassignificant. Results:Overa23-yearperiod,therewere318DM-relateddeathsand316PM-relateddeaths.Overall,DM/PMwas designatedasanunderlyingcausein55.2%andasanassociatedcausein44.8%;among634totaldeathsfemales accountedfor71.5%.Duringthestudyperiod,age-andgender-adjustedDMmortalityratesdidnotchange significantly,althoughPMasanunderlyingcauseandtotalmentionsofPMtrendedlower(p0.05).Themean agesatdeathwere47.76±20.81yearsforDMand54.24±17.94yearsforPM(p=0.0003).ForDM/PM, respectively,asunderlyingcauses,theprincipalassociatedcausesofdeathwereasfollows:pneumonia(in43.8%/ 33.5%);respiratoryfailure(in34.4%/32.3%);interstitialpulmonarydiseasesandotherpulmonaryconditions(in 28.9%/17.6%);andsepticemia(in22.8%/15.9%).ForDM/PM,respectively,asassociatedcauses,thefollowingwere theprincipalunderlyingcausesofdeath:respiratorydisorders(in28.3%/26.0%);circulatorydisorde
