IsabellePagé1andMartinDescarreaux2* Abstract Background:Sidebridgeenduranceprotocolshavebeensuggestedtoevaluatelateraltrunkflexorand/orspine stabilizermuscles.Todate,nostudyhasinvestigatedmusclerecruitmentandfatigabilityduringtheseprotocols. Thereforethepurposeofourstudywastoquantifyfatigueparametersinvarioustrunkmusclesduringamodified sidebridgeendurancetask(i.e.alateralisometricholdtestona45°romanchairapparatus)anddeterminewhich primarytrunkmusclesgetfatiguedduringthistask.Itwashypothesizedthattheipsilateralexternalobliqueand lumbarerectorspinaemuscleswillexhibitthehighestfatigueindices. Methods:Twenty-twohealthysubjectsparticipatedinthisstudy.Theexperimentalsessionincludedleftandright lateralisometricholdtasksprecededandfollowedby3maximalvoluntarycontractionsinthesameposition. Surfaceelectromyography(EMG)recordingswereobtainedbilaterallyfromtheexternaloblique,rectusabdominis, andL2andL5erectorspinae.Statisticalanalysiswereconductedtocomparetherightandleftmaximalvoluntary contractions(MVC),surfaceEMGactivities,rightvs.leftholdingtimesanddecayrateofthemedianfrequencyas thepercentchangefromtheinitialvalue(NMFslope). Results:Nosignificantleftandrightlateralisometricholdtestsdifferenceswereobservedneitherforholdingtimes (97.2±21.5secand96.7±24.9secrespectively)norforpreandpostfatiguerootmeansquareduringMVCs.However, participantsshowedsignificantdecreasesofMVCsbetweenpreandpostfatiguemeasurementsforboththeleftand rightlateralisometricholdtests.StatisticalanalysisshowedthatasignificantlyNMFslopeoftheipsilateralexternaloblique duringbothconditions,andaNMFslopeofthecontralateralL5erectorspinaeduringtheleftlateralisometricholdtest weresteeperthanthoseoftheotherside’srespectivemuscles.AlthoughsomeparticipantspresentedpositiveNMFslope forsomemuscles,eachmusclepresentedameannegati
