Methods:Wesearched11databases(withoutlanguagerestrictions):MEDLINE,AlliedandComplementary Medicine(AMED),EMBASE,CumulativeIndextoNursingandAlliedHealthLiterature(CINAHL),KoreanStudies Information(KSI),DBPIA,KoreaInstituteofScienceandTechnologyInformation(KISTI),KoreaMed,Research InformationServiceSystem(RISS),ChinaNationalKnowledgeInfrastructure(CNKI)andtheCochraneLibrary.The searchstrategywasGuasha(ORscraping)ANDpain.RiskofbiaswasassessedwiththeCochranecriteria(i.e. sequencegeneration,blinding,incompleteoutcomemeasuresandallocationconcealment). Results:Fiverandomizedcontrolledtrials(RCTs)andtwocontrolledclinicaltrials(CCTs)wereincludedinthe presentstudy.TwoRCTscomparedGuashawithacupunctureintermsofeffectiveness,whiletheothertrials comparedGuashawithnotreatment(1trial),acupuncture(4trials),herbalinjection(1trial)andmassageorelectric currenttherapy(1trial).WhiletwoRCTssuggestedfavorableeffectsofGuashaonpainreductionandresponse rate,thequalityoftheseRCTswaspoor.OneCCTreportedbeneficialeffectsofGuashaonmusculoskeletalpain buthadlowmethodologicalquality. Conclusion:CurrentevidenceisinsufficienttoshowthatGuashaiseffectiveinpainmanagement.FurtherRCTs arewarrantedandmethodologicalqualityshouldbeimproved.
