Methods:Weevaluatedthecorrelationbetweenpre-mortemEVLWvaluebysingletranspulmonarythermodilution andpost-mortemlungweightfrom30consecutiveautopsiescompletedwithin48hoursfollowingthefinal thermodilutionmeasurement.Alinearregressionequationforthecorrelationwascalculated.Inordertoclarifythe normallungweightvaluebystatisticalanalysis,weconductedaliteraturesearchandobtainedthenormal referencerangesforpost-mortemlungweight.Thesevaluesweresubstitutedintotheequationforthecorrelation betweenEVLWandlungweighttoestimatethenormalEVLWvalues. Results:EVLWdeterminedusingtranspulmonarysinglethermodilutioncorrelatedcloselywithpost-mortemlung weight(r=0.904,P0.001).Alinearregressionequationwascalculated:EVLW(mL)=0.56×lungweight(g)- 58.0.ThenormalEVLWvaluesindexedbypredictedbodyweightwereapproximately7.4±3.3mL/kg(7.5±3.3 mL/kgformalesand7.3±3.3mL/kgforfemales). Conclusions:AdefinitecorrelationexistsbetweenEVLWmeasuredbythesingle-indicatortranspulmonary thermodilutiontechniqueandpost-mortemlungweightinhumans.ThenormalEVLWvalueisapproximately7.4± 3.3mL/kg.
