Methods:Consecutivepatientswithbipolardisorders(BP,N=300)andunipolarmajordepression(UP,N=156) completedtheChineseversionoftheHCL-32.ThesubjectsunderwentastructuredclinicalinterviewforDSM-IV Axis-Idisorders(SCID). Results:TheeigenvaluesforthefirstthreefactorsintheHCL-32werecalculatedas5.16(active/elated),2.72(risk- taking)and2.48(irritable)usingfactoranalysis.Cronbach’salphafortheHCL-32wascalculatedtobe0.88.Positive responsestotwenty-eightitemsweresignificantlymorefrequentbypatientswithBPthanthosewithUP,andthe otherfouritems(7th,21st,25thand32nd)showednosuchtrend.Fourteenwastheoptimalcut-offfor discriminatingbetweenBPandUP.TheHCL-32distinguishedbetweenBP-IIandUP,with13beingtheoptimal cut-off.Acut-offof13yieldedasensitivityof0.77andaspecificityof0.62betweenBPandUP. Conclusions:ThisstudydemonstratedthatthesimplifiedChineseversionofHCL-32wasvalidforpatientswith mooddisorders.Theoptimalcut-offof13fordistinguishingbetweenBP-IIandUPwasvalidandcouldbeusedto improvethesensitivityofscreeningBP-IIpatientswhentheHCL-32isusedinpsychiatricsettingsinChina.
